About Independent Living.......

More than ever, young people want to live life to the full, to try new things, make their own choices and be independent. They, quite rightly, expect unhindered access to quality education, unlimited social opportunities and complete freedom to travel where and when they want.

Nonetheless, even in the 21st Century a physical disability can be a serious obstacle to realising these aspirations. Access can still be difficult, equipment slow and expensive to obtain and specialist care support almost impossible to find, even if it could be afforded. Problems with Care Agencies that continually arise include:-

  • Inflexibility
  • High staff turnover
  • Lack of client control
  • Poor emergency cover
  • Poor staff training
  • Unreliability

However, the resources available from the statutory agencies to provide Personal Care are greater than ever before thanks to the Direct Payments Scheme, introduced by Central Government and operated by local authorities for the benefit of disabled people.
